In the past week I have read the novel Young Samurai, The way of the Sword (剣道). The main character's name is Jack and in the novel he is often called (外人) foreigner because his appearance and believes. in Jacks second year of training (武士道) Bushido - the way of the warrior, news form Edo (江戸) have reached Kyoto (京都) about Christians being killed by the samurais of the daimyo (大名) Kamakura. During his second year of training, Jack gets harassed by other students and have the threats of ninjas and the daimyo Kamakura while his competing in an ancient ritual for the school. Jack have support from his friends, however sometimes he's doubting their support and words.
The novel sometimes have Japanese words written in the text as I have earlier in this entry and I will give you the translations of them in English and Swedish later.
I think you would agree with on some things that I found in the novel which I will quote out here:
1.(On page 106) "You cannot run before you've learnt to walk."
2.(On page 220) "'...time to master.?'...'Five years'...'if I work Really hard...?'....'...Ten years'....'all my time to...?'....'Twenty years'."
This quotes are between Jack and a teacher in the novel. Starting with "1." is you can't do anything advance stuff if you don't know the basics, example: if you want to write a book then you need to know words of the language and the grammar. In quote "2." it displays the flow of time and afford to master something. The more time you put in training the thing you want to master along with devotion, the longer time you need to master it because of frustration and mistakes will create a wall in you mind that might be hard to break. Example: if you just spend the required time then a mistake would create a very thin wall and you might still think it's fun at it, but if you are only devoted to master the thing then a mistake will transform to frustration and create 30 kilometer thick wall in your mind. Wouldn't it be better to have a 20 centimeter thick wall rather than 30 kilometer thick wall for one mistake. It takes longer time to get back if you let the frustration control you and it might push you to quit and never attain it. I think it's better to mastering it in short time and have fun and from there I can support other people, may be as a second teacher that might help them understand. To those who nags their children to be as others in young age and school grades, stop and think ´what can I do to help them towards their goals in life´ and remember that we are different from each other and let them bloom later than never. I myself blossomed as late as in junior high school in studies and that helped to where I'm now.
